Ashbrook grad gets 5 years for stealing from UNC Tar Heel student ministry - Gaston Gazette

A former Gastonia man who stole more than $150,000 from the student ministry he worked for — money used to take European vacations and catch Celine Dion at a Las Vegas concert — will spend nearly five years in federal prison.

Brian Lee Cansler graduated from Ashbrook High School in 2009 before attending UNC Chapel Hill and majoring in linguistics. He frequently made the school's dean's list, and shortly after his 2013 graduation was hired by the school's Newman Center Catholic Student Parish.

Cansler quickly rose to financial director of the parish, which ministers to the UNC student body and the Chapel Hill community as a whole.

Selected to be responsible with the church's money, Cansler instead used his position to defraud the parish. First he forged the pastor's signatures on two checks totaling $8,000 that he used to pay himself. He then used two parish credit cards to splurge on more expensive luxuries.

The cards were meant to be used on typical parish expenses, such as liturgical and office supplies. Instead, federal authorities say he used the money on fine dining, clothing, computer products and travel.
